Guest Speaker at the PLI Conferences : Jan-Philipp WEBERPALS

Guest Speaker at the PLI Conferences : Jan-Philipp WEBERPALS

The PLI Conferences will take place this year on June 18 and 19 in Bordeaux, at the Palais de la Bourse. This edition is organized in partnership with Alphanov, Alpha-RLH, Amplitude and Lasea. Eleven internationally renowned guest speakers will be present to share their expertise with you.

Meet one of them, Jan-Philipp WEBERPALS, Subject Specialist Laser Beam Processes for Car Body Construction and Electromobility at AUDI.

His background :

2004: Graduate Engineer, Mechatronics and Automation Technology, Universität Stuttgart

2010: PhD Engineer, Laser Beam Technology, Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW), Universität Stuttgart

2011: Expert Laser beam processes at AUDI AG

2017: Expert laser beam processes for car body construction and electromobility and responsible developer for laser beam processes for high-voltage battery module production

What made you want to work in this field?

His fascination for laser beam technology was awakened at the beginning of his studies at the end of 1999 by Professor Helmut Hügel, the former head of the Institute for Beam Technology (IFSW) at the University of Stuttgart. A pioneer in laser beam technology and Dr Jan-Philipp Weberpals' doctoral supervisor. The initial enthusiasm was triggered by the fact that the laser beam, as an invisible tool, can reliably weld metals together, for example. And this fascination continues to be a great attraction and incentive to constantly rethink and improve laser-based technologies and overcome boundaries. At the same time, with his knowledge and experience, he always influences every step of the process chain - from design to construction layout. The exchange with colleagues is particularly close when transferring a new laser beam technology to production and series production.

How did you learn about the PLI Conferences and what does this event represent for you?

I found out about the PLI Conferences from colleagues in my network. The exchange led to me receiving a personal invitation to give a presentation. I am very happy to honor this invitation, because conferences of this kind make it possible to exchange ideas and think outside the box. New impressions lead to new ideas, some of which are born at such events.

What will be the subject of your conference?

The subject Weberpals will report at the conference is "Enhanced laser beam applications in car body construction on aluminum components". Two examples will be used to demonstrate the implementation of new manufacturing strategies: laser beam remote welding with spatial and temporal beam modulation and tactile laser beam welding with beam shaping. Two processes that increase process stability and efficiency while reducing investment and running costs. Overall this invitations will play an important role in reducing the CO2 footprint of the laser based manufacturing process by reducing the scrap rate in high volume applications.

What do you expect from these two days of conferences?

I expect the two days of the conference to feature exciting presentations from research and application. In addition to the professional exchange, I am looking forward to the personal exchange and networking with colleagues.
