An automated laser welding line designed by Fives at the Grand Palais

From November 22 to 25 2018, Fives participated in the Usine Extraordinaire, a unique public event organized under the nave of the Grand Palais in Paris. The group joined the projects of numerous industrial, educational, associative and political actors to "change your mind about the factory”.

Fives has exhibited in the world "Manufacture" an authentic automated laser welding line, designed and developed at the Fives Machining factory in Saint-Laurent-Les-Tours (Lot), an industrial center of excellence specialized in high power laser applications for the design and manufacture of industrial equipment in the field of laser welding or 3D metal printing. The line was designed for the Renault car manufacturer and installed at the Ruitz (Hauts-de-France) plant at the end of the event. It can be used to assemble pinions / clutches for gearboxes in 15 to 20 seconds and can handle up to 300,000 per year.

Over 40,000 visitors, including 10,300 junior high and high school students  from 55 departments from across France, had the opportunity to take part in this extraordinary industrial adventure, a real immersive journey behind the scenes of a “living factory”. The area of Fives was also visited by many personalities, such as Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, welcomed by Mr. Frédéric Sanchez, Chairman of the Fives Executive Board, and Mr. Laurent Bertaud, Fives Machining Plant Director of Saint-Laurent-les-Tours.

The line mobilized the skills of project managers, technicians and mechanical engineers, in automation and laser process for 9 months at the Fives Machining plant in Saint-Laurent-Les-Tours. This site, in a growth dynamic, currently employs 85 people. In 2019, extension works will double its production capacity.
