As part of our “Spotlight on CLP Members” series, discover the organizations that are helping drive and shape the industrial laser industry. For this new interview, we are giving the floor to IRT Saint Exupéry, a Technological Research Institute primarily dedicated to the aerospace, space and defense industries.
Materials and processes, aircraft electrification, digital technologies: discover IRT Saint Exupéry’s areas of expertise, the technological challenges it addresses, and its vision for the future of laser applications.
Could you introduce your organization, its activities and areas of expertise?
IRT Saint Exupéry is a Technological Research Institute primarily focused on the aerospace, space and defense industries.
Its activities are structured around several areas of expertise, including materials and processes, aircraft electrification and digital technologies.
Through these different areas, IRT Saint Exupéry contributes to the development of technologies addressing the current and future challenges of these industries, with a particular focus on innovation and the development of new processes.
What are the main technological challenges currently facing your customers or your industry?
For the aerospace, space and defense industries, one of the main challenges is the ability to develop solutions rapidly and get them right the first time.
This need for speed and efficiency goes hand in hand with the need to anticipate breakthrough technologies, in order to prepare today for the technological solutions of tomorrow.
Supply chain sovereignty is also an important issue. The ability to control and secure supplies must therefore be taken into account when developing new technologies and industrial solutions.
Could you tell us about a recent laser project, innovation or application that you are particularly proud of?
IRT Saint Exupéry is currently working on the development of laser technologies for paint ablation and weld seam passivation applications.
These developments are part of the search for laser-based solutions tailored to the needs of the aerospace, space and defense industries. They also illustrate the opportunities offered by laser technologies to transform and improve certain industrial processes.
What does your membership of the Club Laser et Procédés bring you on a day-to-day basis?
As our membership of the Club Laser et Procédés is still relatively recent, we are currently at the beginning of this journey.
However, we expect the network to help optimize our developments, particularly in terms of lead times, quality and costs.
Exchanges with the various players in the industry represent an opportunity to share expertise more effectively and foster synergies around laser technologies and processes.
In your view, why is it important today to be part of a network such as the Club Laser et Procédés?
Being part of a network such as the Club Laser et Procédés is first and foremost a way to coordinate, share information and collaborate on specific activities.
In a constantly evolving technological environment, exchanges between the various players in the industry make it possible to better understand ongoing developments, identify complementary areas of expertise and foster collaboration around shared challenges.
How do you see laser technologies and their industrial applications evolving over the next few years?
In the aerospace, space and defense industries, one of the main expected developments concerns the automation of processes.
The objective is notably to increase production rates while improving health, safety and environmental (HSE) strategies.
This development also addresses the limitations of certain manually performed activities, which can raise occupational health concerns, particularly when processes involve CMR substances or, more broadly, products presenting health and safety risks.
The automation of laser processes therefore appears to be a way of both improving industrial performance and addressing challenges related to working conditions and risk prevention.
From rapid development and the anticipation of breakthrough technologies to process automation and the management of HSE challenges, IRT Saint Exupéry is helping advance technologies serving the aerospace, space and defense industries. Its membership of the Club Laser et Procédés further strengthens this dynamic by fostering exchanges, information sharing and collaboration within the laser ecosystem.
A big thank you to the IRT Saint Exupéry teams for sharing their expertise and their vision of future technological developments.
